What is it like to be a woman today…I really have no idea!
“Women, if the soul of the nation is to be saved, I believe that you must become its soul.”
– Coretta Scott King, activist
“… her five sons would be androgenized…”
I was raised by a woman…my mother, I have four younger sisters, my spouse is also a woman and I have three daughters…yet, I really know very little about what it’s like to be a woman in modern society.
Since women actually represent a slight majority of the population (51%), I think it behoves us all to learn more about a perspective which men can never really have. We can guess and speculate about it, talk to the women in our lives, watch movies, read books, observe …but, not really have much certainty about it.
I distinctly remember my mother being determined her five sons would be androgenized, …interestingly a word I don’t think she ever heard in her lifetime. So, I learned to cook, clean, do dishes and laundry, wallpaper, pack, move to a new home quickly, sew on my own buttons, and so on.
I have also watched my daughters paint houses, install flooring, fix machines, build rooms and more. But, I also noticed most of their friends were not so inclined. I guess they have a different set of experiences in their past. It begs the question of what influence does our culture, our society, our media have on our perception of ourselves.
I remember my assertive, self confident, daughter, an engineer, talking about the machoism and discrimination in her chosen profession and later in her chosen job. She displayed, what was for me, a scary acceptance of its inevitability. I can remember being discriminated against for my youth, my lack of skill and my lack of physical strength, but never my gender. I don’t know what that is like!
“Equality is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women.”
– Joss Whedon, writer
We are all watching the “Trump focused media” and noticing its impact. What about the more subtle, yet equally powerful, forms like books and the movie industry. And, now we are also witnessing the recent scandals about movie producers and writers.
So, when I viewed Naomi McDougall Jones’ short Ted Talk entitled, “What it’s like to be a woman in Hollywood…” I was surprised how pervasive and de-powering what we watch, and endorse on the silver screen, tells us about how we view women.
Have a look and I bet you’ll never view another movie again in quite the same way…and, like me, you’ll probably start noticing, the before or after, credits much, much more!
Feel free to share your thoughts with us on Naomi’s idea! Maybe her revolution is already in progress?
“There will never be a new world order until women are a part of it.”
– Alice Paul, activist
