An 11 Pixel Square of Your Nose!
“What colour are you?”
“We all seem to talk about race by using skin colour. The four popular options are red, black, yellow and white. This can have such a profound impact on our sense of self. How would you label yourself? I found a brief Ted Talk which left me realizing I’m actually a “baizy, pinky grey” and it has changed how I think about race from now on!
Angélica Dass, a photographer, challenges how we think about skin colour and ethnic identity. She created a portrait project, called, Humanæ, to document humanity’s true colours rather than the untrue white, red, black and yellow.
Angelica captures her portraits in a white background. Then she chooses an 11-pixel square from their nose and paints the background with this colour. She then looks for the corresponding colour in an industrial colour palette called, Pantone.”
I think Angelica’s project is a powerful testament to our level of illusionary fog, how we have coloured ourselves, and each other. But, this hasn’t happened yet to today’s children. Maybe, we can show them how to preserve their awareness by uncovering our own, with which we were born.
I wonder how this could impact how children see themselves and others. I welcome your observations and thoughts.
