Child’s Play Legacy
“A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on. Ideas have endurance without death.” ~ John Fitzgerald Kennedy ~
A Fearful Worrier
Megan was a bubbly, precocious 8 years old. She had long brown hair and matching big brown eyes. She also had a sparking curiosity which she projected with a quick smile and little dimples in her cheeks. But the other dark side was her continual stress from worrying about everybody and everything.
Her Mom and Dad were divorced and she lived with her Mom. Her Dad had remarried and Megan liked her Step Mom. But she only saw her Dad briefly when he came back to town from his work on an oil rig somewhere in the Atlantic. Both her parents were concerned about her excessive worrying and fearfulness. It had started to show up, not just at home, but in school as well.
We Started Playing Cards
Megan’s curiosity made it easy to build trust with her. We started by playing card games of “Go Fish!” and “Crazy 8’s.” Then, intuitively creative, like very child, she started drawing pictures which I hung in my “gallery” … also known as my seminar room. Megan soon took some measure of pride in doing a picture for me each week. She was very free and expressive with the rainbow of markers she used on my big flip chart.
Understanding the Laws of Nature Makes You Wise and More Appreciative
While we worked, we talked about many things. The subjects ranged from her pets to her two families to her school. She was open and trusting, yet insightful and honest … a typical child of the 21st century. Eventually I took our discussion to how we were all part of nature; how we all follow the laws of nature and how understanding these laws of nature makes you wise and more appreciative of yourself and those around you.
Natural Laws and Symmetry …
We talked about several examples of these natural laws such as gravity, light, symmetry, sound, mass and friction. Then I focused Megan’s attention to just one of them, the law of symmetry. She soon understood how our universe displays a pervasive symmetrical duality in numerous ways.
Our Language Reflects Symmetry
We looked at how our language reflects this duality with words like: up and down; in and out, over and under, high and low; left and right; black and white; inside and outside; good and bad and so on. We then looked for specific examples of symmetry in her life. She found many in her world including hot and cold water; hot and cold weather; good and bad grades, good and bad moods.
The 50 /50 Game
We made up a game we called “The 50/50 Game!” to test this law of symmetry out. If it really applied all the time and everywhere then we should be able to find the two sides of anything going on around us. Then we spent some time exploring where she could see the symmetry law being displayed in her own life. I asked her to notice if she found any exceptions to the law of symmetry.
Megan’s Version of the 50 / 50 Game
Megan eagerly went about uncovering the law of symmetry in her life. She found the two sides to her parent’s divorce; to living only with her Mom; to seeing her Dad less than she wanted; to having a brother who teases her too much; to having school homework, to her pet dying, and so on. She struggled a little at first but very quickly relished in uncovering the “other side” as she called it.
So this became our game and she was soon able to use “The 50 /50 Game” for feeling afraid, for worrying, for feeling sad and many others situations in her young life.
She soon moved to finding the negatives in the positive things in her life including being smart, be creative, having as best friend and so on. Her flexibility in moving from one side to the other gave her a sense of control of herself and her perceptions which empowered her in a new way that she appreciated. And with this gratefulness, her self- confidence also spread more widely across her world.
Megan’s Rapid Evolution
Megan uncovered the duality or the symmetry to each event she had previously perceived as only negative or only positive. I would notice her expression soften and relax into a kind of “knowing” look …she had wisdom beyond her years. She seemed not just more empowered but also more accepting and appreciative of the events she had previously been upset about. She projected calm and harmony that seemed to radiate from within her.
Megan’s Quiz:
We were approaching our last session and I told Megan I was going to give her a special quiz on “The 50 / 50 Game” so she could see how much she had learned in our work together. I told her I would pick three “tough topics” that most people think are only bad. She seemed thrilled with this kind of challenge. Then I added she would need to find three good things about each topic. This dampened her excitement, but only slightly.
I wrote on my flip chart three topics and asked her to write beside them three good things about each. Her three topics were: war, pollution and global warming.
She looked at them for a minute, flashed a smile at me and then went right to work.
Megan’s results!
Her analysis was as follows:
War – Megan said it teaches us not to fight; we have solders to protect us; and soldiers stay fit and healthy to do their job.
Pollution – Megan said it tells us we are not taking care of the world; it makes jobs for a lot if people and it tells us to be careful of what we do and to clean it up.
Global Warming – Megan said it makes us take care of the earth better; it makes us wear more sunscreen to protect us and helps us exercise more by going swimming.
Megan’s evolution to wisdom …
By learning a fundamental law of nature, which applies to all of us all the time, Megan broadened her perspective of her life, making her perceptions more accurate and truthful. In so doing she had achieved a clearer sense of herself and her world and projected a calmer presence reflecting her new found wisdom. She left feeling much more OK about herself and her future. All she did was apply the symmetry law, which many of us older folks ignore or refuse to acknowledge.

If an eight year old can achieve this in a matter of hours, imagine what could you do with this law in your life? It could be the most important game a child, or indeed anyone, could learn for their future well-being. “The 50/50 Game” may be the most important game anyone could ever learn.
