Have you ever met a FCP or a MCP?

“I just noticed how strikingly out of place, and out of touch she was…”

I remember seeing my first FCP.   It was many years ago but in early September, like it is now.   She was dressed like she was going to a fancy party or perhaps to church.   She was strolling down the street in her neighbourhood like a starlit on the red carpet of Oscar Night.   I watched her climb a flight of stairs and go into her house.   I didn’t know she was a FCP then.   I just noticed how strikingly out of place, and out of touch, she was that afternoon with her real self.

Surprisingly, the next week, she walked into the daycare centre where I worked with her mom.   She was 60 months old and already a full-fledged, fastidious, functioning FCP…FEMALE CHAUVINIST PIG!   She was a 5 year old ‘lady.’   She only played with dolls, dresses, makeup and sometimes, tea.   She had no interest or time for cars, trucks or tools.   That was ‘boys’ stuff’

She had learned, from those who loved her, to define herself so narrowly that if she turned sideways she would disappear…but maybe that was the intent.   She already had an invisible mental handicap that would colour the rest of her life.

And, of course, there are lots of MCP’s everywhere, too…Male Chauvinist Pigs.  Living in a small agricultural community, I meet them regularly.   These guys are about the same age, 4 to 8 years, as the FCP’s, but they dress down, not up.   They wear jeans, t-shirts and baseball hats with an exclusive interest in machines, action figures and violence in some form, usually sports or the martial arts.    They also learned this from the people who love them dearly and they also will experience the same emotional handicaps, and limited relationships, as their female counterparts.

The illusion many us have is that this sex stereotyping is behind us now, women and men, have been liberated from all this, except for some backward, 3rd world countries, whom we are working on with due diligence.
