I’ll Bet You Just Want To Be Positive And Happy, Eh?
“To find out what one is fitted to do and to secure an opportunity to do it is the key to happiness.” – John Dewey, educator
“…new branch of psychology…”
Each and every science is studying some part of the natural world. For example, biology focuses on human anatomy and its systems. In a similar way, geology centers it attention on the earth and its systems. And psychology looks at the human mind and it systems.
There is a relatively new branch of psychology termed “positive psychology. Rather than merely treating mental illness, this branch uses ‘scientific understanding and intervention’ to aid in the achievement of a satisfactory or happier life. You might say, a more positive, health focus, instead of a negative, illness one.
There is an International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA) which was recently established that has expanded quite quickly to thousands of members in over 80 countries. This quick growth suggests many people feel a need for psychology to evolve in new directions.
The IPPA’s missions include: (1) further the science of positive psychology across the globe, ensuring the field continues to rest on this science” (2) work for the effective and responsible application of positive psychology in diverse areas including organizational psychology, counselling, clinical psychology, business, health, education and coaching” and (3) “foster education and training in the field.”
“…key advocates…”
There are several key advocates for Positive Psychology, two of which are Marty Seligman and Bill O’Hanlon. Seligman has been one of the chief advocates for Positive Psychology and has an interesting video worth reviewing that outlines the key ideas called “The New Era of Positive Psychology.”
O’Hanlon also has a shorter video where he identifies 4 principles that lead to happiness.
“Have a look at it and let us know what you think.”
We are wondering what are your thoughts about this new ‘happiness’ focus? Is it needed? Is it a useful approach? Please share your thoughts and experiences. Have a look at it and let us know what you think.
“Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside.”
– Ramana Maharshi, teacher
