PMS, Depression’s Twin Sister!
“…I wonder if…”
It has been estimated one in ten adults could be labelled clinically depressed and not be receiving treatment. That is a staggering statistic. It begs the question: How could so many people get missed by our their family, friends and their health care system? But it also begs another question: What if, it is simply not accurate?
This bring me to Post Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and the work of Robyn Stein DeLuca, a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University. Robyn has been teaching Women’s Studies through the lenses of psychology and healthcare for over fifteen years. Robyn studies the psychology of pregnancy, including postpartum depression and the psychosocial consequences of cesarean delivery. For two years, she was the Executive Director of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at Stony Brook.
In November 2014 she gave a 15 minuteTedTalk entitled, “The good news about PMS” which is both “riveting” and “enlightening.” And, I wonder if, how we think and treat PMS applies to depression, as well. Have a close look at the video and let me know what you think.
Namaste, (I salute the grandly organized design of the universe, manifested in you!)
