Where Is Your Wealth?
“Beneath your every fantasy is a hidden need!” ~ Ken Pierce ~~
I want to be Prime Minister…
Otto sat down in the rocking chair in my office tense and agitated. I asked him how I could help him. Looking me straight in the eye he said with a very serious voice,
“I want to be Prime Minister of Canada!”
Knowing this man was not kidding by his intense demeanor, I said,
“Do you belong to a political party?”
“Not yet!” he responded tersely.
I said, “Well, my best guess is you need to join a party, work up through the ranks to be a senior member, then party leader, then you could run for election as their prime minister.”
“That is just about how I figured it as well!” he said, his voice softening slightly with resignation.
What do you really want?
“Would you really want that kind of task at this point in your life?” I asked.
“I am not sure!” he said.
“Do you believe you could devote the time and energy required to find out?” I said.
“Not likely!” he retorted with frustration.
“Otto, I have found beneath every fantasy is an important need, so what would you settle for that think you could achieve?”
“Really, I am so poor and broke … I just want a job!”
Otto’s Story …
Otto has been unemployed for almost two years and had not been able to find a way to generate an income to support his young family. He had borrowed from a close friend to get some help because he had decided the economy wasn’t the problem … he was the problem.
Otto spent the next few weeks developing a new awareness and attitude toward himself and wealth. He eventually found a job. When we were finishing up our work I asked him what was the most important thing he learned … what was the difference that made the difference for him?
The difference that made the difference …
He said it was all about his value system and three things made the difference for him.
First; what his value system really was and where it came from …
Otto had never given much thought before to his value system. He said when he learned it was mostly unconscious this surprised him. When he realized it was not just about what you think but equally what you do, this made him curious. Learning his value system came from what his past life experiences have taught him about life and that started him on the road to appreciating its role in his life.
“Many people do not have a clear idea about their real values!” ~ Ken Pierce ~
Then he found out it wasn’t just about honestly, hard work and helping others. This put a whole new light of his sense of himself. He learned he demonstrates his value system every day in how he spends his time, his money, his energy, his dreams, his frustrations, his self-talk and his talk to others. Even what he is organized about, what he is self-controlled about and what pushes his buttons displays his value system.
Second; how his value system affected him …
Otto thought he was poor. Then he realized he may be poor right now in economic wealth but he was rich in family wealth. He said when he learned everyone has wealth in the form which honors their value system he had one of those “Ah Ha” moments.
The main reason he felt poor he realized was because of the hierarchy of his values. He told me he had felt neglected as a child so placed very high value on making sure his family knew he was always there for them. Otto knew he could go out west and find work as many others had done. But he wasn’t prepared to pay that price to be away from his family. His wealth was here in his family.
“You are very wealthy within your highest values but you need to uncover it!” ~ Ken Pierce ~
He said if he didn’t place such high value on family he could work away from them more easily. Realizing this was his value system, which came from his past life experiences, he also realized he wouldn’t want it any other way. For Otto it was OK to be poorer financially to be richer in family. He talked with pride about his wife and two children.
As he learned to appreciate the forms of his wealth he realized there was no mistake in what he had been doing. Appreciating his form of poverty raised his self worth. This changed his attitude and energy toward his life. He soon found a job in a call centre.
Third; making his value system more conscious enabled him to appreciate who he was and act accordingly …
Otto had been living life unconsciously according to his value system. And he was putting himself down for what determined his poverty and not noticing his wealth. When he made it conscious he started to raise his self worth, self-esteem and self-confidence. Then he could make decisions more effectively and with more certainty. This was instrumental in him developing a new attitude toward his future. This, he said, resulted in him finding a job that honored his values.
Otto was on his way, not to be Prime Minister but to be a person who is aware of his values and uses them consciously to guide his life.
