A WORKAHOLIC IS ALSO DEPRESSING!
“…I will say yes. I make it a firm rule for one reason, to give myself permission, to free me from all of my workaholic guilt.”
Depressing takes so many forms! I found an interesting one in a recent Ted Talk.
Many people think, the solution, or the opposite of depressing, is elating. And, in fact, millions often try to avoid or solve depressing, by seek to create elating. This is our fascination with sports, and all other forms of contests…where the losers depress, and the winners elate. We seek to be, or even hang around, the winners in any contest.
But, you can also avoid our depressing by exaggerating or infatuating some other aspect of your life, such as your job. But, I want to let Shonda Rhimes tell you her own story. She does it very well! But she’s got lots of practice in storytelling. Shonda is the writer/producer behind television’s Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder. And, interestingly, it all starts with a toddler’s question.
I think it caught my attention because I remember, many years ago, being stopped cold in my tracks by a blue eyed, three year old’s question. I know it changed the focus of my life, from that day forward. Maybe that’s why I see the genius in Shonda’s insights.
But, a word of caution! Watch it to the very end. Don’t get distracted, or sucked in, by her apparent arrogance, and seemingly narrow perspective. You may even have the urge to stop it midway, as I did. Please, persist, and you won’t regret it! Her evolution and wisdom will be worth your wait!
I welcome your observations and thoughts.
UNTIL NEXT TIME…
Now, you have another perspective on a number of things including depressing, workaholics, parenting, play, and even your work. Since there are no mistakes in your life, and you watched Shonda Rhimes’ video to the very end…what did you notice of value to you in your life. Write it down and notice what you can take from it, to serve you in your future!
